The three main short-stay routes
For tourism, visiting friends and family, and limited business activities, most visitors fall into one of three categories.
1. Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
The ETA is aimed at passport holders from a defined list of eligible countries. It is electronic, linked to your passport, and generally allows multiple visits over a 12-month period, with each stay limited to up to three months. It is the most common route for eligible travellers and is typically applied for through an authorised channel rather than a paper form.
2. eVisitor
The eVisitor permission covers a different group of eligible nationalities, mostly European. Like the ETA, it is electronic, valid for multiple entries over a year, and intended for stays of up to three months at a time. There is normally no application charge for the eVisitor itself, although service providers may charge a fee for assistance.
3. Visitor visa
If your nationality is not covered by the ETA or eVisitor, or if you need a longer or different type of stay, the Visitor visa is the broader option. It involves a more detailed application and supporting documentation.
Which one applies to you?
The deciding factors are your passport nationality and the purpose and length of your trip. Two travellers on the same flight can legitimately need two different permissions. Before you do anything else, confirm which route your passport qualifies for — applying through the wrong stream is a common and frustrating mistake.
What you can and cannot do
All three short-stay routes are designed for visiting, not working or studying long-term. As a visitor you can generally:
- Take a holiday and travel around the country.
- Visit family and friends.
- Attend conferences, meetings or negotiations.
- Undertake limited, short business activities.
What you cannot do on these permissions is take up ongoing employment or enrol in a long course of study — those require different visas entirely.
